The first major construction event to take place after the Mayor Election

On May 5th 2016 the mayoral elections took place in London. Sadiq Khan, the new Mayor of London has declared housing as his number one priority, even describing the election as a “referendum on housing”.  Some of the main housing policy proposals being put forward include:

• A pledge to increase the rate of house building to 50,000 a year

• 50% of all new homes in London to be genuinely affordable

• Supporting housing associations, who build 40 per cent of all London’s new homes, and who have committed to double their construction pipelines from 90,000 to 180,000 homes

• Long-term planning for new and affordable homes tied in with new transport infrastructure, including proposals such as Docklands Light Railway extensions, the Bakerloo Line extension, and Crossrail 2
